WARNING: Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillars have been spotted in Dutchess County and we’ve seen them in East Fishkill. If you spot one, don’t touch it. This caterpillar can cause allergic reactions such as skin irritations and in some cases more severe reactions which could include nausea and swelling.
The species originates in Canada and feeds on the leaves of Hickory, Walnut, Ash, Elm, and Oak trees during the months of June – September.
Please tell your children not to pick them up, they look cute but can be dangerous.
They are fuzzy white caterpillars with a black chain-like marking.
